Front and center, the Taj Mahal rises in fine detail — the monument an emperor built for the wife he couldn't let go of. In the foreground, a Sarus Crane stands tall: India's tallest bird, and one of the few that mates for life, which is why it became a symbol of everlasting love. Beneath it floats a Pink Lotus, India's national flower, the bloom that rises clean out of the mud water. And look to the back — a line of elephants makes its way across the scene, the way they might have crossed these grounds centuries ago, carrying emperors and empires.
Every one of those symbols made it onto a bag sewn by Gilbert, one at a time, in my studio. No factory, no duplicates — just craftsmanship and a little India in your day.
